Social media (or SOME) is the hot topic for yet another year running. And this is of course understandable; we are talking about something that has largely changed how we interact with one another, be it business or private mingling. Perhaps even more than we momentarily see. As an engineering nation we Finns seem to have a need to put everything in procedures and flowcharts. Social Media, however is like water or electricity, it cannot be twisted and turned and placed in a mould. We are busy forming strategies and plans on how to utilize social media for our benefit. The funny thing is... there is no guarantee on what the turn out will be. Social media is democracy at its finest, it cannot be censored, beautified or manipulated. Falsity will hardly pass through the sieve. And that is great! Social media filters us stuff that is good for its own sake.
Based on the lessons learned, I can summarize the winning formula (or the least likely to fail) of interacting in the social media sphere by the following three statements:
Be present. Be interesting. Be genuine.
On Saturday we participated in a social media seminar organised by the Espoo chapter of JCI (Junior Chamber International). The venue was busy with people interested in the theme and we had some excellent discussions. Thanks again for the organisers for a great event!
